So how do you measure circumference sizes?

It's important to ensure free movement range in most areas of measurement so that the final product (the garment you're sewing or buying online) won't be too tight. You can do this by placing one or two fingers between the measuring tape and your body.

Neck

Measure the circumference in the area closer to the shoulders. Neck circumference is important when sewing or buying a garment with a collar for men or women.

Shoulders

Measure the distance between the two points where the shoulder joins the arm. This measurement is crucial when creating a shirt or jacket with sleeves, as it ensures the garment will fit comfortably.

Chest / Bust

Measure the circumference of the fullest part of the chest, ensuring that the measuring tape remains horizontal and does not sag. For women, this measurement is essential for tops, dresses, and jackets.

Waist

The waist is the narrowest part of the torso. To measure it, wrap the tape around the waistline and add a finger for ease. This is an important measurement for dresses, skirts, and pants.

Hips

Measure the circumference of the fullest part of the hips, typically at the level of the buttocks. Ensure the tape stays horizontal. This measurement is important for skirts, pants, and dresses.

Arm Length

Start from the top of the shoulder, down to the wrist bone. This measurement is especially relevant when creating or buying long-sleeve shirts, jackets, or coats.

Leg Length

Measure the inside leg from the crotch to the ankle. This measurement is necessary for buying or creating pants and skirts.
